To all our members, we wish you a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Chairman’s Column
Dear Fellow Members
All South Africans were very relieved by President Cyril Ramaphosa`s announcement on Sunday September 20th that the country would go into lockdown Level One after over 170 days of a shutdown that has left a massive impact with outcomes that are challenging for most businesses and individuals including in particular, the hospitality and leisure industry.
Whereas South Africa’s containment and management of the COVID-19 pandemic has in relative terms surpassed many other countries , the current resurgences in parts of Great Britain, Europe and America confirm that there is no room for complacency and, that we need to maintain the protocols of masks , temperature checking, sanitising and social distancing as required by regulation.
The past month has seen a cautious move towards more normal daily living best evidenced by the substantial increase in traffic on our roads as more people have been able to return to work and schools have re-opened their gates to learners.
Rugby returned Newlands albeit without spectators in mid- October and with the Stormers now using Kelvin Grove as their pre- and post-match base for the remainder of the season. We are pleased to welcome the entire group including Chippy Solomons, John Dobson and Siya Kolisi and look forward to sharing their games!
Kelvin Grove is enjoying a slow recovery but Management and the Committee are committed to ensuring that our monthly turnover currently approximately one third of the pre-Covid numbers improves on a steady and incremental path in line with longer trading hours that are now permissible and most importantly, renewed member support.
Our half year financial position was shared with members in early October and whilst attendance at the meeting was low, details are available through the General Manager’s office but in summary, no food and beverage turnover during the lock down meant that member subscriptions were our only source of revenue requiring that reserves have had to be utilised to cover the costs of running the Club.
At this stage, we do not anticipate an increase in member subscriptions but will be asking those members willing to do so to pay their subscriptions earlier than usual and I must at the same time ask for your support of the Staff COVID Fund and, that you use our food and beverage outlets as a contribution to turnover as we bring our Club back to a degree of normality after what have been exceptionally challenging circumstances for all and, more so for many.

Editor’s Column
Dear Members
As the year draws to a close, our hearts go out to all our members and staff that are and were affected by the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020.
We continue to strive and meet the guidance and regulations from Government and public health authorities across the globe, as our number one priority is the safety of our members and staff while continuing to serve you.
Since the partial re-opening of the Club in May, we tried to be innovative by offering home-cooked deliveries, converting the Coffee Shop into a deli for shopping made safe and convenient, and launched a new website and booking system. Kelvin App to follow soon.
We can be extremely proud to have such a beautiful Club – even though our gates were closed for a lengthy period, our team worked behind the scenes to ensure that our gardens would look pristine once open again. Our Marketing team created a 1km walking route within the Club grounds which I trust you have explored. If not, feel free to collect a map from the Coffee Shop.
Thank you for all the sporting sections that kept their members “active” by communicating via Zoom calls and participating in various Pilates or Gym sessions from the comfort of their homes.
The pandemic crippled the SA economy, and this is reflected in our turnover and member spend per head to date.It is however encouraging to note, that since officially opening the Deli in June our sales have increased by 87% in November!Thank you to all the members that are supporting the Club and enjoying the facilities – Kelvin turned 95 this year, what a year to remember!
We are constantly looking to improve our offerings and keeping up our communication to members. It was wonderful to have received so many suggestions from members over the last few months. We have implemented what we can and will continue to monitor them, to ensure that the offerings we add are matched with the demand and can highlight the value and benefit of being a KG member.
Please note, Annual subscriptions are due by the 31st March every year and our letter confirming the 2020 fees was sent to all members during November. If you have not received the letter, please contact the Membership Department.
The Functions team is working hard on making the Festive programme for this year extra special, Santa’s Family Picnic will kick off the season with the switching on of the festive lights. Christmas Eve and NYE is always one of the highlights of the year for the Club – even if we have to work around the constrains of the curfew and closing the Club early to get staff home in time. Please don’t delay in making your dinner reservations. The DHL Stormers will also be at the Club on Day of Goodwill (26th December) after their home match at Newlands, please come and mingle with them in the Pool Bar after the game.
If haven’t ordered your Mince Pies from the Coffee shop, I would urge you to make it a priority – they are selling out fast!
Last, but not least I would like to take the opportunity to firstly thank the outgoing and incoming Committee of 2020, the various sporting committees, the Executive Management Team and Staff for all their time, dedication and effort they put in to make the Club what it is today.Due to the hard work done by the team, a number of opportunities were identified which led to significant cost savings for the club during the tough times experienced during lock-down. The Committee met weekly during the lockdown and Covid-19 period to support and lend advice which has been invaluable.
The staff took many sacrifices to ensure the ultimate survival of your Club. Despite all our efforts, in these strange times we had to make difficult decisions. Our thoughts are with every staff member that we had to say goodbye too, but we are hopeful, with great challenges sometimes come great opportunities, and together we will rebuild.
Warm wishes for a blessed Christmas and prosperous new year. Safe travels over the festive period for those who are planning to go away.

Bowls
Kelvin bowlers are gearing up for a busy summer. Highlights of the bowls calendar for the coming months include:
- the club championships, with preliminary rounds of ladies’ and men’s singles and pairs and mixed pairs now under way, and the finals scheduled for December 11/12
- a friendly with six mixed trips teams against Pinelands Bowling Club on November 14
- the annual 2-4-2 tournament over two days in November
- the Marion Ord trophy event in December and the Personal Trust Invitational at which we host other Western Province clubs in January.
Bowls has already hosted its first post-lockdown corporate event – for golf club managers – and looks forward to welcoming other corporate guests. Hire of bowls for corporate events boosted Kelvin Grove Bowls income for the year to June 30 by R9 590.
Meanwhile, the bowling greens are getting a ramp-up in speed after lockdown through a wet winter affected their healing process. The make-over began with verti-cutting through the turf surface to slice up lateral growth and tease up the turf before mowing and this is being followed by a gradual process of brushing, grooming and cutting to get grass down to the required level of 2,5mm. Also in the pipeline is a project to build up the banks of the greens to a required height.
Bowls gains new members
A gain of 16 new members, offset by some resignations and deaths, saw Kelvin Grove Bowls membership at 185, the annual meeting in September was told.
These new members will be among beneficiaries of a formalised training programme developed with the help of senior players, says Elaine Anderson, who was re-elected bowls chairman. The launch of the programme, which aims to provide a more advanced level of training primarily to members who are in the third category of player, was thwarted by the lockdown, but it will be introduced as soon as practically possible.
Kelvin Grove Bowls champions were presented with their trophies at the annual meeting in September. They are (from left): Vyv Deacon, winner of the Cecil Craig Cup for handicaps 1-6, Avril and Liz Melville, ladies’ pairs champions, Karen Redman, ladies’ singles champion, Louis von Broembsen, Roz Webb and (right) Penny Steynor, winners of the Marion Ord trophy, and Gary Lyttle, the men’s singles champion.
Bridge
The bridge players are a garrulous, happy lot and it is sometimes difficult to decide whether one is at Kelvin Grove bridge or at a rugby match!
Despite the fun and noise, the standard of bridge is on the high side. Much to the delight of most of the bridge players, boxes are now being used.
As one does not play with a regular partner at Kelvin, advanced or difficult conventions are discouraged. However, if you would like to play bridge, but have not played for a while, you are more than welcome to join the club for a trial run. The very pleasant players will nudge you along gently. Unfortunately, beginners are not catered for.
Bridge is played on Monday and Friday afternoons from 13h30-17h00. If these times do not suit you, you may come later or leave earlier.
Everyone is welcome except, firstly, those who criticize their partners and, secondly, those who have colds or coughs.
If you find yourself at a loose end on a Monday or Friday afternoon, think about spending an hour or two at bridge. There is no commitment, nor do you have to come on both days. There are several players who come once a week. For more information please contact Daphne Hawkins on 072 358 4280 or Dee Krauss 0721947007.
Croquet
The lifting of restrictions, due to the Coronavirus, to level one was greeted with relief and excitement to the members of the croquet section. Although certain restrictions were still in operation, we were able to resume play in compliance with level one rules.
Although all inter club matches and tournaments have been cancelled for the remainder of 2020, we have been able to hold club competitions.
On 17th October 2020, our handicap doubles was held successfully and enjoyed by all players. Runners up were Margot Prosser and Marilyn Bailey. Trophy presented by Nicolette Ketterer.
The winners were Thea Lotz and Jean Farrell.
Congratulations to the winners and to Thea for winning her 26th croquet section trophy.
Anyone interested in joining us on the croquet courts, please come along to our beginners coaching lessons to be held on the first and third Thursdays of each month. Please simply add your name and contact details on the sheet as displayed on the croquet section notice board. Alternatively contact our secretary Jean Farrell 082 856 5010 or our coach Di Schuurman 083 287 4415.

Baby arrivals: We would like to extend our congratulations to Chevonne Maree (Banqueting Co-Ordinator) who gave birth to a baby girl on the 23 September 2020. Further congratulating Khululwa Gqamane (trainee chef) who gave birth on the 28 September 2020 to a baby boy. Both moms are doing well and settling in with their new-borns.
Positively Positive
Having enjoyed a few meals at the Club recently, there are one or two members of staff whom I would like to commend to you. Simba in the Barn was really welcoming, efficient and a great credit to your staff last night. As was Althea whom we know more from the Deli. Jasmine always shows great appreciation for praise & communication and is a calming influence wherever she is working. Lee-Ann in the Terrace last Sunday was most attentive and gave our small party a happy dining experience – kindly offering one of the guests (who is a non-red meat eater) an alternative. All Kelvin staff are really “walking the extra mile” and we value & appreciate this.
We had an evening at a well-known local steakhouse recently. The previous week we went to the Barn. The Barn was by far the best: a great steak at really good value as well as excellent service. Many thanks and keep up the good work. All the best
The Terrace staff, following the very hospitable attention given by Bronwyn, were superb and the courses and drinks were served seamlessly. A friendly culture exists in the Terrace and we look forward to continuing entertain there. Celeste is a great acquisition as she has the perfect bubbly personality for dealing with member function planning. Her table setting, seating plan at the door, and preparation of seating name cards and her nonobtrusive presence right until the room had been emptied shows commitment. In conclusion, the event was a great advert for our fine club, and I congratulate you and your team and wish you a successful return from lock downs to a thriving Kelvin.
My mate and I were greeted with a smile and the service that followed was superb not only from the young lady who served us, but from the kitchen staff and the heartfelt request for comment from a gentleman who I assumed was the duty manager. The waitron was knowledgeable and answered my question on the freshness of the Hake confidently. Her follow up suggestions on dessert were on the money. Despite the restaurant filling up, service was excellent and accurate. We both left feeling we had a great evening. As Vincent may have told you I have only been a member since the beginning of March 2020 but have been to the club on several occasions and this service surpassed the good service I have always experienced at Kelvin.
The food and the service were outstanding. The lunch was probably one of the best we have ever had. It really made us proud to be Kelvin members.
Firstly, I would like to commend Shahiema for the exceptional/professional/efficient service provided in securing our booking, the follow up meetings afterwards, and to all involved in the setting up of the ballroom and observing strict Covid-19 protocols. Secondly, to the Security company on site. Connie, Ivor, and her team were professional at the entrance to Kelvin Grove in their interaction with the members attending the AGM. Their handling of a situation that could have escalated out of control was dealt with efficiently, professionally, and swiftly.
